Cohesive Styling for a Coastal Wedding

Tuesday 28th June 2016
Styling is about much more than filling a room. It’s about connecting each space through flow of design, functionality and building narrative by integrating the natural environment around you. Drawing inspiration from the insouciance seaside lifestyle and the light textured, nature-based palette of the sandy surrounds, we’ve collated a guide to creating cohesive coastal spaces.

Once your event concept has been decided on, it should be developed into a theme that unifies aspects of your immediate environment. For the context in which the event will be staged is crucial in providing a warm, holistic experience for your guests.

Where you might want to think about engaging with an event stylist is to achieve cohesion and balance in your ceremony and reception spaces. We called upon Melbourne styling and events company, Georgeous to provide some general guidelines on how to ‘dress’ a space that fluidly incorporates the surrounding milieu.

“Invest in some hero styling pieces and let the rest be understated and classic,” Creative Director Georgie Rayner suggests. “It helps to do an initial mood board or ever a written paragraph about your wedding style and with every subsequent styling decision refer back to this to ensure it fits with your original vision.”

Flowers that are empathetic to their surrounds and ‘look at home’ in their environment provide a solid foundation to your overall styling. “We recommend working with a florist who has a loose whimsical style. Your flowers will ultimately have a less contrived and more effortless look to them,” Georgie says. “Consider the vessel the blooms will be in and look beyond the default options of clear glass. Positioning the arrangements with a cluster of candles will make sure the blooms look right at home.”

Generally speaking, the surrounding of your venue will fuel the style of your wedding.  In this instance, we turn to the ocean for inspiration and it’s calming almost remedial properties. While boating and beachcomber motifs keep the vision simple, cohesion is created by inducing all of the senses. “Think outside the literal objects of sand, shells and driftwood,” Georgie says. “Consider the senses to bring in oceanic sentiments without detracting from the natural surroundings.”

What are five unique ways to incorporate oceanic sentiments and accents into a coastal wedding?

Linen – Consider a moody sheer piece of fabric used as a sheath over a wooden table. More away from stark white polyester cloths and napkins.

Menu – The food and beverages subconsciously become a part of the overall look of the wedding. Seafood feast or oyster bar, anyone?

Smell – Certain scents will take you straight to the ocean. Consider a fragrant candle in the restroom. We adore Glasshouse Fragrances’ Amalfi Coast.

Paper elements – Think blue hues and water colour for the menus, place cards and invitations.

Floral – Look for a florist who can work a little less constructed and work on a brief verging on ‘bohemian’. We love a bridal bouquet with flannel flowers throughout – the perfect ‘casual’ flower for a coastal inspired wedding.
